Myn Heer,

Ik dank U E. voor uwe schenkagie, twee werken waardig sulk een werkmeester. Sophokles Electra is altyd gehouden geweest voor uitnemende onder des treffelyken mans Treurspeelen. Ik heb by wylen wel gedacht van deselve in ’t Latyn te stellen, ge- lyk ik tot Hamburg zynde gedaan heb Euripides Taurische Iphi- genia, dewelke ik nu onlangs gezonden heb aan myn broeder de Groot. In S. Ursula heeft U E. boven zyn gelukkig verstandt ook getoont een zeer loffelyke genegentheit tot zyne geboortplaatse, dewelke ik geluk wensche met sulk een spruit, en wensche U E. lang leven, gezontheit en gerustheit van gemoedt, om niet alleen zoodanige als deze zyn, die zeer treffelyk zyn, maar ook grooter stukken ten dienste, nut, en lust van alle Nederlanders voort te brengen.

Nadat ik dit geschreven hadt heb ik de twee stukken ten einde toe geleezen, en vinde in Electra de zin en de hooghdraventheit van Sophokles wel uitgedrukt. In Sinte Ursul verwonder ik my over de kloeke vinding, schikking en beweeghlykheit.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your gift, two works worthy of such a master. Sophocles' Electra has always been considered one of the finest among that great man's tragedies. I have sometimes thought of translating it into Latin, as I did with Euripides' Taurian Iphigenia while in Hamburg, which I recently sent to my brother de Groot.

In St. Ursula, you have shown not only your brilliant mind but also a commendable affection for your birthplace, which I congratulate for having such a distinguished son. I wish you a long life, health, and peace of mind, so that you may continue to produce works as excellent as these, and even greater ones, for the benefit, use, and enjoyment of all Dutch people.

After writing this, I read both pieces to the end and found that Electra captures the spirit and grandeur of Sophocles well. In St. Ursula, I am amazed by the bold ideas, arrangement, and emotional impact.
