Je n’entreprendray pas, Monsieur, d’emettre icy les louan- ges qui sont dues à vos vers . . . mais en laisse le soign à mon Pere, qui au moins s’en scaura mieux acquiter que moy, et ne differera pas de vous faire response et à Monsieur van Vondel aussi tost que ses forces le luij permetttront... J’en suis de mesme rede- vable à Monsieur Van Vondele, et en outre de ce qu’en s’adres- sant à moy par ses vers, il m’a fait de l’honneur que je n’avais ny merité ny attendu. Quand vous le verrez, je vous supplie de le luy tesmoigner de ma part, et de l’assevrer que je luy suis com- me a vous Monsieur

I will not attempt, Sir, to express here the praises that your verses deserve... but I will leave that task to my father, who can at least do it better than I can, and he will not delay in responding to you and to Mr. van Vondel as soon as his health allows him... I am equally indebted to Mr. Van Vondel, and moreover, for the honor he has given me by addressing me in his verses, which I neither deserved nor expected. When you see him, I beg you to convey my gratitude to him on my behalf, and assure him that I am, as I am to you, Sir,
