’t Boexken van d’inquisitie is my welkoom.

HOOFT TO BAECK
July 29, 1631, Muiden
Today I had Mr. Coster here to discuss some details about the Battle of Heiligerlee. Vondel came along, and it seems to me that they both have their heads full of [the Academy], but I don't really know what they're missing. After they told me about the escape of the imprisoned teachers at Loevestein, it seems it wasn't a fabricated story, which I had hoped for, to decide on a general inclination of the States towards moderation.

Enclosed is also a response to Vondel's letters, which I have sealed because there is nothing special in it for Your Excellency.

The book on the Inquisition is welcome. Vondel sent a humorous letter with it, which I am forwarding to Your Excellency to show that some news can come from here too. But it should not be spread around, as a malicious person might extract something offensive from it. It is true that the writer does not shy away from small matters, but for other reasons, it is too lengthy to discuss here.

Vondel was very confident last time about the publication of Grotius's books. Now he has received conflicting news. He says that the same Mr. Grotius speaks highly of Floris van der Haer's Histories. Nevertheless, my opinion is that there can be no clearer account of the origins of the disturbances than from our Walloon writer, whether it is Hopperus or another.
